The topic of divorce would seem to require no introduction. Divorce refers to the often messy and painful end of a marriage. For better or for worse, divorce is a very common event these days. Most everyone has been touched by it, either by going through it themselves as a spouse or a child, or knowing someone who has gone through it as a spouse or as a child. On an all India level, the Special Marriage Act was passed in 1954 and the Hindu Marriage Act in 1955, which legally permitted divorce to Hindus. Hindus include Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs etc. This Act supersedes any text, rule or interpretation of Hindu law or any custom or usage hitherto recognized as part of that law. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 amended in 1976 and 1981, provides for judicial separation, divorce, nullity of marriage and annulment of marriage.
